On 11 November the Hudaco Training Centre in Elandsfontein saw an unusual class. Ladies from various companies had the pleasure of attending an interesting introduction to hydraulics and pneumatics that was especially tailored for those not familiar with matters technical.
Bob Lill, of Ernest Lowe, had a hopper display panel, which was used to demonstrate how pneumatic systems are implemented - and Dave Michelle, of Genflex, compared the workings of pneumatics to various parts of the human body. This made it interesting and easy to follow for those knowing nothing about the subject. Forty-eight ladies attended the presentation, which was also open to non-SAFPA members.
They were invited to answer questions and each lady was rewarded with her own certificate from SAFPA for her attendance and participation. Snacks and drinks were served and it turned out to be a very successful afternoon. The ladies were thrilled and are ready for more occasions such as this; here are some responses:
"I would like you to convey my sincere appreciation to both Dave and Bob for their very informative (and entertaining) presentation on Thursday afternoon. (Successful salesmanship is 10% preparation and 90% presentation). I am sure all the ladies enjoyed themselves as much as I did.
Our general knowledge of the products and industry in which we work has been broadened. I sincerely hope this event will become (at the very least) an annual event and that more ladies will be afforded the opportunity to attend. Well done guys - a great idea - tackled with enthusiasm! A big thank you to you too Charmaine (of Cost Time Resource), for all your hard work ensuring the afternoon was a great success."
Karen Kemp, executive secretary of Ernest Lowe
"A quick note to thank you for your wonderful efforts (and in the leadup). The afternoon session was very informative and I think the Ladies Only part helped most of us relax enough to listen to what was being said. Please keep me posted with details for any other sessions that might be hosted in the future."
Samantha Cutter, April Trading
"Thank you for inviting us to the ladies talk. I thought this was very interesting. I think that this must be done more often. Another great idea is if we could go to a company where we can see work in progress, or even down a mineshaft - would that not be cool. Thanks again."
Janine Crane
"Thank you for a very nice afternoon yesterday. We had lots of fun and also learnt a lot. It would be great if we could do this more often. Please pass our thanks onto Dave and Bob; we enjoyed their seminar and look forward to meeting again."

Soccer day
The SAFPA 6-a-side Soccer Day took place on 10 October 2004 at 74 Football Club. Eleven teams participated and the winning team was Rand Building Hydraulics. It turned out to be a fun filled day for all participants and their families. We thank all the companies that participated and supported this event.
