Once again a year has come and gone and the festive season is upon us. It is an opportune time to reflect on our Association's activities this year and what our achievements have been for our Members.
The majority of our Members are reporting decreased demand levels from their client base. This is as a result of a cutback, in particular, from the mining industry owing to the present exchange rate. Certain sectors of the economy are performing very well and this may have a positive effect on our industry in the medium term.
One of the initiatives we carried over from last year was the Unit Standards Project in conjunction with Merseta. After spending a considerable amount of time on this exercise it is frustrating to report that no positive results occurred during the current year. Merseta have internal capacity problems and no experienced facilitator could be appointed to head up the fluid power Standards Generating Group (SGG). Merseta has committed itself to do so in the New Year.
Speaking of next year, one of SAFPA's most important initiatives will be a market study. Numerous company leaders have been approached and the overwhelming response is very positive. It is an overdue study but previously there was reluctance to participate in such an exercise. Therefore, it is pleasing to note a change in outlook whereby members are willing to contribute towards establishing the market size of the fluid power industry. A meeting will be convened early in the New Year targeted at company leaders to explain the format to be followed.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend best wishes to all from the SAFPA Committee for a peaceful and joyful Festive Season and please remember to be vigilant when on our roads during this very busy time of year.
