Bearing shortage
4th Quarter 2011
News & events
According to Bearings 2000, OEMs must prepare for a significant shortage of bearings within the next 12 months and should adjust their orders accordingly.
“Industrial operations in South Africa face the possibility of longer turnaround times,” says Bearings 2000 director, Nick Stamatiadis. “Lead times may be as long as two years, even for standard stock items. The shortage is not unique to South Africa and has occurred as a result of complications in the international market after the 2008 economic crisis.”

To avoid unnecessary delays for its customers, Bearings 2000 is already increasing its order quantities. Many sizes are now being ordered up to 18 months in advance, as opposed to the traditional period of three to six months, and the company’s stockholding has doubled over the past 14 months. However it is anticipated that by the middle of 2012 there will be significant shortages of certain sizes.
Stamatiadis adds that if the shortage becomes a major issue it might have the secondary effect of promoting fake bearings in the import market. Customers should be vigilant and bear in mind that all reputable brands represented locally come with a free service to verify their authenticity and identify any counterfeits.
Bearings 2000 sources its stock through official channels and is an established distributor of the well known FAG brand of precision rolling bearings for the automotive, mechanical engineering and aerospace industries. With an inventory of over 10 000 product lines and a stock value in excess of R22 million, the company is able to provide a comprehensive supply solution for all bearing and power transmission component needs.
