Tsholofelo Choma, who started her journey at SKF South Africa in July 2022 as a CNC operator in the Machined Seals department, now proudly holds the position of quality environmental health and safety (QEHS) officer and exemplifies SKF’s employee-centricity ethos.

Her entry into the engineering field was no ordinary feat. She is the only woman in her apprenticeship group to qualify as a tool die, jig and mould maker, a highly demanding trade that requires technical mastery. Out of 30 apprentices, only seven passed their trade test, all on the first attempt, an achievement that she is rightly proud of. Tsholofelo’s success is not just a testament to her abilities, but also her resilience in a field dominated by men.

For Tsholofelo, SKF is more than just an employer. “It’s a workplace that fosters growth and innovation and that offers endless opportunities,” she sayss. She soon transformed her role from a skilled CNC operator to a pivotal position in SKF’s SHEQ department as QEHS Officer. Her journey is not just about career progression, it’s about breaking barriers, redefining limits and embodying SKF’s values of collaboration, courage, curiosity and care.

When Tsholofelo Choma reflects on her career, one sentiment resonates: ‘preparation meets opportunity’. This philosophy drives her as she continues to carve a successful career path. Stepping inside the SKF building for her initial interview, Tsholofelo recalls that she was struck by how clean and well-maintained it was. “I left with a feeling of excitement about the opportunity for growth and feeling validated in wanting more for my career.” This initial impression proved to be a precursor to the supportive environment she would later describe as “a privilege”.

Bringing with her a wealth of machining and quality control expertise, Tsholofelo’s tenure in the Machined Seals department was marked by her proactive approach. While her role as an operator focused on specialised programming and quality control, Tsholofelo consistently sought opportunities to contribute beyond her immediate responsibilities. She participated in audits, amended processes and took ownership of core aspects of the business. This drive to excel did not go unnoticed and paved the way for her promotion to the SHEQ department.

Tsholofelo’s transition to the SHEQ department reflects her passion for creating impactful change. “I realised I could serve others more effectively by addressing workplace issues like ergonomics and hygiene, which directly impact employee well-being and organisational efficiency.” Her interest in safety management stems from a desire to create a workplace where employees feel valued and protected, which she views as essential to fostering innovation and productivity.

Currently awaiting the results of her National Diploma in Safety Management, Tsholofelo is already making strides in her new role. Her responsibilities include compiling safety packs, conducting audits and overseeing aspects of the management system. Although she’s only been in the department for a few months, her contributions are bringing tangible results. “Delivering a compliant safety file that enables others to do their work gives me a sense of accomplishment,” she shares.

Tsholofelo has made continuous learning a cornerstone of her career, highlighting her dedication to growth. She actively seeks out training programmes and mentorship opportunities that align with her goal of making a meaningful impact. “I believe that when you expand your knowledge, you also expand your capacity to uplift those around you,” she advocates. “Being an SKF employee means you are part of a community that values collaboration and supports personal development. The access to learning opportunities and a culture that avoids work politics makes it a great environment in which to thrive.”

Her commitment to personal and professional development extends beyond her immediate role. Tsholofelo often volunteers for company initiatives that promote inclusivity and diversity, ensuring that her contributions leave a lasting legacy. During her participation in a mentorship programme aimed at supporting young women entering technical fields, she shared her journey experience with others, and encouraged them to pursue paths they might not have considered.

Tsholofelo’s inspirational story is a reminder of the transformative power of determination, opportunity and support. As SKF continues its journey toward creating intelligent and clean solutions for a better tomorrow, it’s employees like Tsholofelo who embody the company’s purpose and values, proving that with courage and curiosity, the possibilities are endless.
