How Engenius

4th Quarter 2011 News & events

To address the chronic shortage of engineering skills in the country, Government plans to develop 30 000 engineers by 2014. In support of this initiative, the Engineering Council of South Africa has partnered with other stakeholders to launch a national initiative called Engenius. The purpose of Engenius is to grow and transform the engineering profession by fostering national collaboration amongst interested parties and by promoting the engineering profession to primary and high school learners.

As part of this initiative, Engenius’ participated in the annual Sci-Bono Week, aimed at creating awareness of the role of the engineering profession and facilitating interaction between students and industry.

The Engenius campaign also aims to provide young people with an understanding of the role of the engineering profession in their lives with the driving message: ‘Join the team that shapes the future’. The goal is to inspire youngsters to make engineering a career. In addition the attractive and informative Engenius website features the following five areas: explore engineering; try engineering; join engineering; identify engineering challenges; and help. The Engenius webpage can be found at www.engenius.org.za .

Engineering professionals and students as well as career guidance facilitators from participating organisations will be trained to use standardised multimedia presentations, activities and branded products to inform and educate. This will give them the opportunity to share their work, make engineering accessible to ordinary people, give career guidance and act as role models for young people.
