At the end of November 2006 The Great Wheel Corporation awarded Bosch Rexroth AG the contract to supply the automation system for the world's largest Ferris wheel. The 208-metre high wheel will be ready in time for the 2008 Olympics, taking place in Beijing's Chaoyang Park. Rexroth is responsible for the engineering, delivery and installation of the complete control and drive system, as well as the automation of the boarding stations.

Reliability and safety are key requirements of the Great Beijing Wheel from the technical aspect. The drive system designed by Rexroth comprises a powerful, almost maintenance-free hydraulic power unit. Hydraulic motors drive 32 special tyres, which press against the 198-metre diameter Great Wheel, making it rotate smoothly three times an hour. A back-up system guarantees reliable operation even if a fault develops in the main circuit. This Rexroth drive concept has been operating successfully for six years on the London Eye on the banks of the Thames: up to now the highest Ferris wheel in Europe.
