Siemens joins forces with the National Ventilator Project

News & events
Siemens has been a long-standing partner of the CSIR in South Africa and has cooperated in various fields of research, including manufacturing and mining. The CSIR, in collaboration with a number of local partners including Siemens, has completed work on a local ventilator to be rolled out nationwide to patients showing early respiratory distress during COVID-19 infection. The ventilators are being provided to state hospitals.
According to CSIR executive manager, Martin Sanne, the clinical requirement for the National Ventilator Project was for the rapid development and distributed production of a non-invasive pre-intubation ventilation solution that could be used for most hospitalised COVID-19 patients as part of government’s response plan to the pandemic. The initial requirement was for the design and manufacture of 10 000 ventilator devices and 20 000 patient circuits during July and August.
“We are proud to be the technology partner on this project with the CSIR to provide PLM software support,’’ says chief executive officer, Sabine Dall’Omo. “Using a digital product life cycle design methodology also ensures that the product can be manufactured in multiple factories and in large volumes. We are currently collaborating on a number of other initiatives simultaneously to help fight COVID-19.”
More than eight million rand has been made available by Siemens Digital Industries to manage the design and engineering process to ensure traceability according to ISO13485. Ralf Leinen, senior vice president for Siemens Digital Industries (southern and eastern Africa) adds, “The Corona pandemic has accelerated the pace of digitalisation. Digital and automated solutions will help ensure that companies can respond more flexibly and faster to crisis situations and changing market demands. Globally, Digital Industries has opened the Siemens Additive Manufacturing Network for hospitals and health organisations and provided the Mendix development platform free of charge so customers can quickly and easily develop apps without a programmer.”
The software includes components for systems engineering processes, computer aided design tools, manufacturing execution tools as well as quality management solutions that would ensure compliance to health product regulations for certification.
Process control system for the entire plant lifecycle Siemens South Africa
Editor's Choice
The automation of process plants has been characterised by IT silos for a long time. The high level of IT security required was achieved through strict isolation from the outside world. However, this made unlocking the opportunities for digitalisation very difficult. This is a compelling reason to opt for Simatic PCS neo – Siemens’s completely web-based process control system with state-of-the-art IT security concepts.

Little consideration is generally given to 2-port valves because they are often perceived as simple devices that only open and close to control downstream fluid supply. Although this is mechanically true, choosing the optimal 2-port valve for your application can make a big difference, saving space, weight and energy consumption.
