SMC Corporation has a long history in assisting customers worldwide with pneumatic solutions and components in a wide range of industries. Less well known in South Africa is the SMC ioniser range, which can be used to neutralise static electricity.
Static electricity is an imbalance of electric charges within or on a surface. The charge remains until it can disperse in an electric current or discharge. In food and packaging, the effects of static electricity have a negative impact on production. Applications where static build-up causes problems are conveyors transferring parts; PET bottles attracting dust and causing labelling issues; packaging and shrink-wrapping films attracting dust and deforming on rollers; and parts feeders clogging due to parts sticking to each other. “We have assisted customers with applications ranging from shrink-wrapping flammable material safely to static build-up on conveyors,” says Liezl Siebrits, senior sales engineer at SMC’s Western Cape office.
SMC offers a variety of ionisers to suit different applications:
• The IZS ar can achieve rapid static neutralisation with bar length options up to 2500 mm.
• The IZF fan is the fastest and thinnest static charge neutraliser and eliminates static charge from all types of objects or surfaces.
• The IZN10E nozzle is perfectly compact and with the range of design variants it is possible to modify the ion distribution to a precise fit.
• The new edition IZT bar has a separate controller that can be mounted remotely and controls up to four ionisers, making it more versatile for inaccessible places.

Other technologies
The constant need for relubrication of metallic bearing points on rod ends in industrial applications is a time-consuming and expensive exercise and poses a real contamination risk. As a result, igus has developed maintenance-free polymer-hybrid spherical bearings which are a safer and more cost-effective alternative.

News & events
Little consideration is generally given to 2-port valves because they are often perceived as simple devices that only open and close to control downstream fluid supply. Although this is mechanically true, choosing the optimal 2-port valve for your application can make a big difference, saving space, weight and energy consumption.

Good lubrication reduces friction, which in turn increases the lifespan of mechanical components. Commercial products that are used in intensive applications like wire ropes at mining and mining processing facilities are not always considered for other less intensive uses.
