Innovative control cable for paint robots

3rd Quarter 2016 Robotics & Mechatronics

SAB Bröckskes, a leading manufacturer of special cables, has brought a new control cable for robot drag chain applications to the market. The cable is designed for use in robots, particularly in drag chains for axis 7, and has a high resistance to the chemicals or solvents commonly used in robotic painting applications.

In a painting line in the automotive industry, cables come in contact with highly aggressive chemicals like coatings, solvents and lubricants. This new cable has two important and unique features. One is its robustness for drag chain applications and the other is its resistance to the environmental conditions associated with robotic painting applications.

The robust construction of the cable is essential for continuous flex use in drag chains. In addition the insulation and sheath compounds are especially engineered for flame and chemical resistance. The cable is flame retardant and self-extinguishing and fulfils the demanding FT4 flame test for the North American market. Other special characteristics of the cable include maximum durability under high mechanical stress and permanent flexibility.

The construction elements and materials were all put through extensive endurance tests under real operating conditions. Furthermore, the materials were exposed to harsh chemicals in the laboratory to simulate the environment of the paint shop. In addition to this latest development, SAB offers a broad product range for the robot industry including primary cables, control cables, welding gun cables, supply cables, proportional valve cables, bus cables, camera cables and cables for dress packs.
