An egg-citing lifting solution

1st Quarter 2014 Pneumatic systems & components

When a leading broiler operator in the Western Cape required a more efficient solution for its egg lifting device, Festo had just the right solution. The automated device lifts 72 eggs simultaneously from one crate and relocates them to another.

The old system consisted of vacuum pumps with high maintenance costs and downtime. The new vacuum solution provided by Festo has proven to be more reliable and cost-effective, saving the customer money and increasing the productivity of the plant.

Festo installed a VN-20L-T6 vacuum generator for the system. Available as straight or T-shaped housing, the VN-20L-T6 vacuum generator has a low space requirement, is wear resistant and maintenance free, and provides an extremely fast evacuation time. The VN range has a nominal size of 0,45 to 3 mm and a maximum vacuum of 93%. As an additional option, the system was fitted with an in-line Festo VAF-DB vacuum filter, which is used to remove particles in the direction of suction. The filter cartridge is located in a transparent bowl in order to monitor the degree of contamination and can be replaced as required.

The customer had the option of altering the vacuum during operation with the new Festo solution, which proved to be more flexible. “The simple solution also proved itself to be more cost-effective compared to the old system that the customer had been using,” said Festo sales engineer, Bryan Bell. In addition to the vacuum generator and filter, Festo also offered the customer 72 new suction cups for the end unit handling of the eggs.
