Pressure sensors, differential pressure sensors and pressure-temperature sensors from American Sensor Technologies are ideal for windmill applications. In addition to being rugged, they operate over wide ranges of temperature and environment, from deserts to mountain tops to coastal plains.
Wind energy is an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuel for the generation of electricity. Because of the remote location of many windmills, sensors are critical components in their operation, maintenance and safety. Pressure sensors monitor yaw brake, lubrication oil, cooling circuit pressure, and oil level in gearboxes. Differential pressure sensors monitor filter conditions. As a hydraulic filter becomes clogged, the output signal increases, notifying the controller to replace the filter.
Operating temperatures can range from -50 to 60°C. In addition, windmills can be subject to the corrosive action of salt, mist and fog. Instrumentation used to monitor the operating conditions for the windmill, must therefore survive in severe conditions while offering reliability and trouble-free service.
The AST4000 sensor has high proof and burst ratings with excellent EMC protection. The AST5400 model offers filter condition monitoring with accurate linear readings. The AST20HA allows both pressure and temperature readings from one device, reducing process penetration in the hydraulic system.
Finally, the AST4510 version measures the level of an oil reservoir while offering temperature output as an option. Maintaining and monitoring the level of oil is critical to maintain smooth supply of power from the windmill.
