Advantages of turbine air starters

Powerworks in Midrand specialises in air and hydraulic engine starting and designs and manufactures the Jetstream range of turbine air starters.
These are widely used in the mining industry because they provide a reliable starting solution and also have a number of advantages over electrical starting: they require no electricity so are non-sparking; they are relatively immune to air contamination; there is no need for large and expensive banks of batteries; cranking times are faster and this means higher compression, which raises combustion temperatures and improves starting ability; there is a very rapid recharge of the air tank, even with a small compressor; no in-line lubrication is required; and the turbine elements feature a proprietary wear resistant coating for extended service life. They are available with or without integral relay valves.
Jetstream turbines give outstanding performance on engines ranging from small 2 cylinder 1 litre units to V16s with over 69 litres of displacement. The range is unique in its ability to start at low or high pressures. Costly and bulky pressure reduction valves are no longer required to operate the starter at pressures up to 30 bar. Jetstream starters can be ordered to operate as low as 3 bar or as high as 30 bar. Local manufacture has the advantages of price stability and immediate availability for complete units and spares.
Powerworks also repairs all types of hydraulic and air starters. It is one of the few companies capable of dyno testing starter motors under full load, using a hydraulic dynamometer which can absorb over 300 kW of power. Test certificates are issued and all work is guaranteed.
