Started in 1979 by entrepreneur Maurice Allenby, the company has grown from a small shop in Edenvale distributing MP Filtri filters to a highly effective and dedicated team of 16 under the leadership of Haroun Pochee. Operating countrywide, Hydrasales has a head office in Johannesburg and branches in Durban and Cape Town. It has been associated with MP Filtri since its inception.
MP Filtri for contamination monitoring
MP Filtri designs and manufactures high quality hydraulic filtration and contamination monitoring products for the fluid power industry. These are distributed worldwide. Owned by the Pasotto family, the company has been in the business since 1964. It has 300 employees in Italy and is considered to be a leader in its field. With 60% of its business in OEMs, MP Filtri always has an aftermarket demand.
Guido de Falco, international area manager for MP Filtri, was recently on a visit to Hydrasales and he gave some insight into developments at MP Filtri. With new subsidiaries in Russia and China and distributors in 45 countries, the company is able to respond rapidly to new opportunities. The next area of focus is South America.
New research
MP Filtri is constantly testing new materials and combinations of filter media in the search for ever better performing filters. Efficiency ratings now go to over Beta 1000. The company is currently engaged in research and development into new environmentally friendly filtration products. According to de Falco, cartridges will be lighter, they will be replaced less often and will cause less pollution. They will also be correctly priced in order to pass these savings on to customers. Quality is another key competitive advantage for the company, and MP Filtri is ISO 9001:2008 and Vision 2000 accredited. The new multipass test rig has resulted in further enhancements to the company’s separation technology. A new application is filtration technology for the wind turbine industry, and MP Filtri supplies turbine manufacturer Vestas with filtration kits for hydraulic oil.
“We like the way MP Filtri continuously passes on new technology and keeps us up to date with trends in world markets,” says Haroun Pochee, managing member of Hydrasales. “The company has an early adopter approach and we have a constant exchange of information.” The two companies also meet at international trade shows such as Hannover Messe.
Education
Education is also important as not everyone is aware of the savings that can be achieved by avoiding contamination. From 70% to 90% of hydraulic system failures are caused by particle contamination, but with effective filtering this can be halved. It is up to five times cheaper to prevent contamination than to remove it. In 2011 Hydrasales held a highly successful series of workshops across the country covering contamination control in hydraulic systems using the MP Filtri contamination monitors. MP Filtri will be repeating these in the UK in May.
Different cultures
“Our culture is very different to Europe, which is very competitive and does not factor in slowdowns,” says Pochee. “We are not as pressurised with respect to targets. We are entrepreneurs who find niches. Europe is a mature economy which emphasises manufacturing and technical excellence whereas we are more commercial and customer oriented.
”We are dealing with a world class supplier and we have lifted our game to these standards,” he concludes.
