Large conveyor drives for iron ore

Hansen Transmissions recently secured an order from Sishen Kumba Iron Ore (KIO) for the supply of large conveyor drives for the overland conveyors as well as for conveyors feeding the bedding and blending plant.

Sishen Kumba Iron Ore placed its first order with Hansen Transmissions six years ago. The order consisted of two Hansen QHRJ3 gearboxes intended for certain essential conveyor applications at the mine. The most recent order was for three R and three L drive units carrying a total value of approximately R9,5 million. The R size units, QHRR3 CTN 31.5:1, with a 2660 kW AGMA rating, have a special installed 720 kW motor. The 1370 kW AGMA rated L size units, QHRL3 CTN 25:1, are supplied with a special installed motor of 600 kW.

According to Clive Dicks, Hansen Transmissions sales manager, the three 600 kW drives for the overland conveyors are interchangeable between all 13 conveyor positions with only a slight difference between the belt lengths and tonnage per hour. “The three 720 kW drives are on the conveyor which has a horizontal belt length of 504 metres, and which feeds the bedding and blending plant where it moves product at a rate of 8000 tons per hour,” explains Dicks. “Although we supplied a standard Hansen gearbox, some on site modifications were necessary in order to accommodate the upgrade,” he adds.

He says that there were three reasons for securing the KIO Sishen order: first, Hansen’s team effort, which delivered the best possible solution with superior quality; second, good preparation of the technical data; and third, the outstanding performance of the QHRJ3 gearboxes installed in 2005.

In 2009 Hansen Transmissions won the coveted Frost & Sullivan South African Helical Gearboxes Market Leadership award.
