Energy efficient motors from Siemens

1st Quarter 2011 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Siemens Drive Technologies Division is supplementing its energy efficient IEC low voltage motors with two new frame sizes for the aluminium range and is also increasing the power rating on the rugged cast iron range of motors.

All motors are available in efficiency class IE2 and thus meet the requirements of EC Commission Regulation 640/2009. The new cast iron motors are also offered in efficiency classes IE3 and NEMA Premium.

Siemens now offers the three-phase asynchronous motors of the 1LE1 series in frame sizes 80 and 90 as well as 100 to 160. The new motors with aluminium housing are available as 2 and 4 pole versions. The rotatable terminal box can be set to any angle between 0° and 360°. This means the motor can be connected from any direction, thereby saving time and facilitating installation, especially where space is limited. The 1LE1 series is available from a rating of 550 W in efficiency class IE2.

In the case of the rugged 1LG6 series of motors, the extension of the 315 frame increases the power rating to 315 kW. The cast iron motors are available as 2, 4, 6 and 8 pole versions. With a service factor of 1.15, they offer sufficient thermal reserves for load fluctuations. As well as efficiency class IE2, the new motors can also be ordered in the energy efficiency classes IE3 and NEMA Premium. NEMA Premium corresponds to the efficiency requirements which came into force in the USA from December 2010.

Low voltage motors from Siemens are offered universally in IE2 for the performance range 750 W to 375 kW, and thus meet the requirements of EC Commission Regulation 640/2009. From June 16, 2010, motor manufacturers in the European Economic Community may only market high efficiency motors with the minimum efficiency level IE2. These motors have an efficiency level that is up to 7% higher than standard motors. Carbon dioxide emissions and operating costs are reduced thanks to low power consumption.

The high efficiency motors are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In 2010, Siemens products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by 270 million tons, an amount equal to the total annual emissions of Hong Kong, London, New York, Tokyo, Delhi and Singapore.
