Replacement 2 tonne gearbox supplied under 24 hours
2nd Quarter 2010
News & events
It has been reported that recently a local coal terminal came to a standstill when the terminal’s main conveyor failed on a Thursday afternoon.
“The costs resulting from such downtime can be enormous,” says Bonfiglioli Power Transmission’s project manager, Justin Goosen. “In this case, millions of rand stood to be lost not only by the terminal, but also by the companies for which it was contracted to feed coal, both from and to.
“The supplier of the original gearbox quoted a replacement part lead time of between 18 and 20 weeks. With financial losses growing, the user then attempted to obtain a replacement unit from a number of other suppliers – most showing similar lead times. The supplier offering the shortest lead time was Bonfiglioli Power Transmission.
That Friday afternoon an order was placed with Bonfiglioli for a new gearbox. To be supplied was a HDP140 gearbox weighing approximately 2040 kg.
“The gearbox was built, tested and on its way down to the customer by 12h00 the next day,” reports Goosen, “a turnaround time of less than 24 hours.”
“By the following day, Sunday, it was installed, up and running.”
Bonfiglioli claims this success is due to a large local stock holding, a fully fledged service division for in-house repairs, onsite repairs, and commissioning services. It also boasts the ability to accept and successfully manage large project orders with complete, multiple conveyor gearbox powerpacks.
“Our South African office is one of the strongest operations of Bonfiglioli,” Goosen concludes. “We offer vast experience and service to the local market for the highest quality product, with competitive pricing, and very short lead times.”
