Rugged draw-wire sensor

3rd Quarter 2009 Other technologies

Draw-wire sensors are used in the Ariane rocket launcher. Once a satellite has reached a safe distance from the spacecraft during deployment, the wire sensor is responsible for supplying the triggering signal to start the satellite’s own drive.

Draw-wire sensors are widely used where distances and tilts need to be measured by contact. They measure by counting the rotations of a drum on which a steel wire is wound. Thus a linear motion is translated into a rotary motion which can be gauged via a multiturn potentiometer, an incremental encoder or an absolute encoder. Draw-wire sensors can measure around corners and edges by using deflection pulleys.

Micro-Epsilon offers an extensive range of compact draw-wire displacement sensors, with ranges extending from 50 mm to 50 m. The measured displacement can be output as an analog current, voltage or potentiometric signal. There is also a choice of HTL or TTL digital output signals and there are interfaces for popular fieldbus systems, such as CANopen, SSI and Profibus.

Uses for draw-wire displacement sensors extend from integration into lifts and cranes (to prevent toppling), to applications in the medical and space technology.

Other fields of application can be found in the lift measurement of industrial trucks and conveyors, or in the incline and tilting of patient couches in the medical environment.
