Crack detection and early awareness of metal fatigue can provide major cost savings for plant operators and can be instrumental in preventing fatal accidents.
The CrackFinder X5 from SaluTron GmbH provides non-destructive recognition and identification of cracks on all ferromagnetic steels, iron materials and aluminium. Crack measurements from hairline to up to 5 mm crack depth are possible. The instrument can also measure paint coating and corrosion thicknesses up to 10 mm.
SaluTron’s CrackFinder X5 detects cracks in ferrous, iron and aluminium components
The detector offers risk-free inspections of equipment such as gas piping, pipes and pressure tanks, and does not require the plant to be shut down. The measuring technique does not require X- or Gamma-rays, nor does it magnetise any ferromagnetic steel parts under inspection. This is a benefit over the magnetic particle inspection principle.
Crack search and measurement
The gauge rapidly detects cracks in material under inspection. For steel parts, it can also measure and determine the depth of the crack through a 3–4 mm thick insulating layer. Cracks can also be located and traced through a layer of corrosion or paint up 10 mm thick.
The X5 has a wide range of application in the chemical, petrochemical, gas and power industries and for inspection of heavy machinery.
Measuring principle
The instrument operates according to the magnetic and eddy-current principles. This technology is non-intrusive and does not need additional consumables such as couplants and penetrating dyes.
Measured values are displayed on the backlit LCD monitor.
Calibration functions ensure that material influences and sensor tolerances are largely compensated for by this intelligent instrument. An appropriate calibration block with a 2 mm deep reference crack is part of the scope of delivery.
