The Posi Brake is a spring-applied hydraulic braking system. The brake uses spring force to apply braking mechanically and uses hydraulic pressure to overcome the spring force and hence release the braking. The footbrake valve, when progressively depressed, decays the hydraulic pressure in the brake circuit allowing the springs to force the brake discs together causing the vehicle to brake.
The SAFHAS (spring applied failsafe hydraulic applied service) brake incorporates two systems. The footbrake valve, when depressed progressively, applies increasing force onto the wet discs which causes the brakes to be applied, stopping the vehicle. Under failure conditions, when there is no hydraulic pressure, a spring applied failsafe parking brake comes on. This parking brake is released when there is sufficient hydraulic pressure.
