Rotary encoder has CANopen interface

Second Quarter 2008 Other technologies

The rotary encoder gSENS DWG 20 is Hirschmann Automation and Control’s latest addition to its encoder product portfolio. This high resolution optical absolute value sensor, with aluminium housing and compliant with the requirements of protection class IP67, can convert mechanical angle settings to digital signals and forward them to the control system via its CANopen interface. This makes this encoder particularly suitable for use in equipment where the superstructure rotates since it overcomes the difficulties associated with transferring encoder signals over slip rings.

The rotary encoder has a grey-coded sampling disk with 14 tracks (including monitor and interpolation track) which are scanned via infrared diodes and phototransistors with a resolution of 13 bit. The node ID 32 and a Baud rate of 20 kBaud are set as standard. Depending on the application, these values can be reconfigured via SDO-telegrams to an ID between 0 and 89 and a rate of 20 kBaud to 1 MBaud.

The rotary encoder, with a power supply designed for 10-30 Volt direct current, has a temperature range of -40 to +85°C. It also offers a high EMC, vibration and shockresistance.
