Test drive the new V1000 Yaskawa VSD

First Quarter 2008 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Drives from Yaskawa have earned a reputation for performance, functionality and quality and as a world-class compact current vector drive the new Yaskawa V1000 from Varispeed continues that legacy.

With a service-free life in excess of 10 years, Yaskawa’s V1000 VSD should capture significant market share
With a service-free life in excess of 10 years, Yaskawa’s V1000 VSD should capture significant market share

In the V1000 Yaskawa claims to have created the first compact current vector drive with the following standard features:

* Function block diagram (FBD) programming via DriveWorksEZ.

* Side-by-side installation due to advanced special alloy hybrid heatsink.

* Removable terminal block with incorporated parameter backup function.

* EN954-1 Safety Category 3, Stop Category 0.

* UL, CE, RoHS and TUV certification.

Other features of the new drive include an extensive power range from fractional to 18,5 kW (up to 4 kW in 230 V single-phase), dual CPUs with a speed scan cycle of 2 ms, embedded Modbus communication up to 115 kbps, powerful open loop current vector control, programming function block diagrams, below normal panel usage with side-by-side mounting and split personality 'normal duty' and 'heavy duty' ratings (constant/variable torque).

The V1000 design features maintenance monitors to ensure the drive's health, on-line tuning to maintain performance of the motor and application presets to make installation faster and easier. The EN954-1 Safety Category 3 safety input to disconnect the motor at the first sign of trouble is standard and reduces external wiring and contactors.

The new drive uses 50% fewer mechanical parts than its predecessor, extending the drive's MTBF.

Innovative motor control technology allows the use of both induction motors and synchronous motors with the new drive through its special software. This allows users who wish to use a variety of motor types to swap motors in the same system. A synchronous motor far surpasses an induction motor in energy efficiency when operating a compact application. By using a synchronous motor, the ultimate in energy saving and mechanical miniaturisation is possible. The drive is capable of continuous operation after momentary power failure, whatever the type of motor is used.

Communication protocol options include DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP, Profibus-DP and Modbus TCP/IP.

The V1000 makes controlling motion easy. It operates with near-servo precision, making sure that your motion controls are as effective as can be. Varispeed claims that it also makes controlling costs easy, by saving companies as much as 72% in energy usage when used for HVAC air handling duties.

The reliability of Yaskawa drives is the stuff of legend. PCS Phosphate, of White Springs, FL, USA, which runs its plants on Yaskawa drives, recently reported three drives had been running 24/7 for more than 18 years. The V1000 is a leap ahead of those earlier Yaskawa designs due to its long service life. Beyond this, a field-failure rate of less than 1 in 10 000 means that it will continue to outperform other drives long after the average service-life expectancy is over.

Readers can take the V1000 for a virtual test drive by visiting http://V1000.yaskawa.com and downloading the free V1000 Drive Simulation Software. The software allows users to simulate inputs and outputs, programme and simulate different load and fault conditions.
