Since restructuring into two divisions - Learning Systems and Training and Consulting - Festo Didactic has expanded its curriculum. Courses cover topics such as pneumatics, hydraulics, PLCs and mechatronics, as well as subjects relating to plant and machinery performance. The aim of these courses is to assist customers in optimising performance and quality of manufacturing operations.
The new courses relate to process control and support the new process control product range that Festo now distributes. This wider range of courses meets industry requirements more comprehensively.
"There is a major increase in demand for training worldwide, not just South Africa," says Tom Webster, manager of Festo Didactic. "However, it is especially important in South Africa to address these needs due to the increasing skills shortage."

The three new courses encompass two basic modules and one advanced module. The two basic courses cover such content as basic electrical principles, identification and measurement of analogue and digital signals, process variables measurement principles, open and closed loop systems, analytical measurement, process sensors, valves, and pumps.
The advanced course, Practical Mastering of Closed Loops, covers all aspects of closed loop control, including commissioning, measuring, operation of control system, and use of software. It is being developed by Festo Didactic South Africa for Festo worldwide and is expected to be available by June 2008.
"We have experienced tremendous growth in training. In addition to adding new courses, we have doubled our staff and anticipate the training of 1000 people this year compared to 868 students last year."
