'Pick-to-light' sensor light

First Quarter 2007 Other technologies

Turck presented the K50 signal light with integrated optical sensor for so-called 'pick-to-light' applications at the Motek. In 'pick-to-light' applications signal lamps indicate to the operator the compartment from which a part must be picked, and the sensor automatically detects the removal of the part and sends an acknowledgement signal to the control. In this way fault-free component picking can be achieved even with manual drawer systems.

The K50 covers the area in front of the component box with its light beam and thus detects the hand of the operator. And during component removal the operator can see the box from which the next component must be picked in a large and well visible lit-up area. The K50 continuously monitors the compartments which have been selected and automatically acknowledges if the operator actually reaches into them. The K50 installation at the mounting location is simplified by the combination of light signal and sensor, as an additional demand light installation - the so-called job light - is not necessary. This is an additional advantage particularly in confined spaces.

Turck customers can revert to the well-known 16 channel piconet combination modules for detection of the K50 signals and setting the outputs for the job lights. The compact I/O components have been fully vibration and shock tested, and are thus ideally suited for harsh industrial environments. Each one of the total of eight M8 connectors of the module with IP67 degree of protection provides a digital 24 V DC input and a digital output with 0,5 A for the application. The miniature Y-junction which has been specially developed for this application splits both signals to an individual M8 connector. Thus all available I/Os can be used in an efficient and space-saving manner with a minimum of mounting effort.

The transfer of the process data received to the higher-level control, generally a PLC or an IPC, is implemented via a standalone combination module or via a combination module expansion, which is connected to a coupling module for Profibus-DP, DeviceNet, CANopen, Interbus or Modbus TCP via the fibre-optic based IP-Link.

Turck is represented in South Africa by RET Automation Controls.
