Magnetostrictive position sensors work on a contactless measurement principle, so they do not wear out. Temposonics (represented locally by ATI Systems) developed an effective signal evaluation method whereby jitter, signal interference and falsifications are essentially eliminated. For the user, this means higher measurement accuracy, increased stability of the output signal, better reproducibility and an optimal resolution - with resolution as fine as 1 µm.
Temposonics is now offering its revised R series (and a new G-series) of magnetostrictive sensors. The latter will replace the L and T2-series, retaining compatibility. Introduced at Hanover Messe 2004, the further enhanced high-end product (type 'R') features a smaller electronics housing and a new mechanical design. The innards have been revised and the new electronics have done away with wiring, which means one major trouble source is eliminated. No temperature-sensitive components (potentiometers, etc) are used and a wide range of output signals is available. The units may be easily calibrated from outside without opening the sensor housing - a new sealing concept featuring double-screened electronics and new filter for protection against shock and vibration will allow operation in difficult environmental conditions. The SSI, CAN and analog outputs of the R-series are fully protected against surges/spikes on the 24 V supply - this was known to be a source of sensor destruction in the past.
Opening of the hermetically sealed sensor head is only required for initial programming, after that modification of the analog and digital signal output as well as sensor calibration for span start and end are via the data line. (The-G series features programming via infrared interface.)
A complete range of tools to facilitate the adjustment is available from MTS. With the exception of the infrared interface via PDA, inclusion into the data line from Temposonics to the control system is by means of a T-adapter. Sensors mounted out in the plant can be adjusted from the control cabinet via:
* A programming tool in a miniature housing for analog sensors.
* A combined built-in instrument with programming tool for analog sensors.
* A PC/laptop programming using a software tool and a connecting box for analog and digital sensors.
* A software tool for PDAs. In this case, transmission is contactless via the infrared interface - and checking is done by means of the G-series sensor's LEDs.
In the case of analog sensors, setup is via three switches on the programming tool. These adjustment functions cater for the most common applications, using one magnet for displacement measurement. High-convenience operation is also available via laptop/PC. This utility also facilitates programming of Temposonics instruments with digital outputs and two magnets - for displacement and speed. In terms of output signals, the new microprocessor-controlled sensors offer a complete range of functions for motion control.
Red and green LEDs permit rapid interpretation instrument status, including: mode of operation, out-of-range, missing position signal, high supply voltage, sensor serial number, etc. This information facilitates commissioning and - if the need arises - troubleshooting.
