Hydraulic systems & components

A versatile design house

3rd Quarter 2016 Hydraulic systems & components

Hydraulics specialist, Axiom Hydraulics, was established in 1963 and over fifty years later has grown from a small family business into one of South Africa’s leading hydraulics enterprises.

In addition to supplying top quality international brands, the company also manufactures manifold blocks to customer specification and designs and builds complete hydraulic systems, including drives, integrated hydraulic circuits and power packs. “We don’t just offer components, we provide full hydraulic systems to OEMs countrywide,” says Eugene Tondolo. “One of our strengths lies in our ability to produce a complete solution for any hydraulics requirement for any industry. In essence we can offer mechanical, hydraulic, hydromechanical and electrohydraulic solutions for the smallest to the most complex mobile or industrial application across a very wide range of industries.”

New premises

Axiom recently moved to new premises in Wadeville, Johannesburg. “Our old building was stunting our growth as we were desperately short of space,” continues Eugene. “We now have a new lease of life and will be able to introduce new products to supplement our range. This will contribute to our growth by expanding the choice we can offer our customers.” Axiom has purchased new machinery that has improved our manufacturing capabilities. We are able to manufacture systems ranging from pilot control systems, to systems greater than 1000 l/min. All the required valves are ex stock, which makes for a quick turnaround time. System design is done in-house using the latest CAD packages for circuit design.

Top brands

Axiom’s range of top drawer agencies includes ASA oil coolers; Ausco brakes; Black Bruin low speed, high torque motors; Brevini Fluid Power pumps and motors; Guardex couplings; Oerlikon Fairfield gearboxes; Sun Hydraulics cartridge valves, bodies, manifolds, proportional valves and complete electronics solutions and Zinga filtration.

One of Axiom’s flagship brands is the high quality range of low speed, high torque (LSHT) Black Bruin motors, a leading supplier of radial piston hydraulic motors and rotators offering innovative hydrostatic transmission and rotation solutions. They are available in sizes varying from 500 cc/rev to 16 000 cc/rev. Both rotating case and shaft output are available. They are also available in multi-speed options. The multi-speed motor is not restricted by preferred rotational direction and thus provides the same top performance in a wide speed range in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions.

Also on offer are planetary gearboxes from Oerlikon Fairfield, with torque outputs from 1000 to 25 000 Nm, as well as track drive gearboxes from 18 000 to 130 000 Nm.

Eugene points out that everything Axiom supplies is ex stock and this is a big selling point. If an item is not a stock item it immediately becomes one when a customer makes a purchase, so customers can be supported at short notice.

Also in the portfolio are electroproportional valve solutions from Sun Hydraulics, which manufactures a complete line of directional, pressure and flow control valves. Axiom’s manifolds come standard with electroproportional capability and can be interfaced with PLCs or basic electronic control circuits to give proportional outputs. Eugene says that these are very versatile and the range has been used extensively both in mobile and industrial applications.

Unique qualities

Axiom is totally committed to protecting the intellectual property of its customers. “When we design a system it becomes the customer’s property and we would never use the design again,” explains Eugene. “If we have a request, we refer it to the customer. We believe that this is unique to Axiom and we will never waver from this philosophy.”

Another interesting feature is that Axiom subscribes to the ideology of an open workplace. This implies no job titles, hierarchy or job descriptions, with an open office configuration which promotes good communication, and this has been carried through to the new building. Axiom regards all its customers, staff and suppliers as stakeholders. In recognition of the contribution made by its staff, most of whom have been with the company for many years.

“Axiom Hydraulics enjoys excellent working relations and support from all our suppliers, which in turn enables us to pass on their specialised knowledge to the industry. We will continue to strive to be relevant in changing markets. We have long established supplier contracts and offer quality proven products and services and we will continue to be strongly customer focused,” concludes managing director, Neill Simpson.

How to protect against water hammer
SA Gauge Editor's Choice Hydraulic systems & components
Water hammer is a high-pressure surge or wave created by the kinetic energy of moving fluid when it is rapidly forced to stop or change direction, altering the liquid’s velocity. The progression of the water hammer shockwave needs to be detained and slowed before reaching the instrument sensor. SA Gauge manufactures several such devices in order to achieve this.
