CMG Electric Motors has added a wide range of flexible transmission solutions to its product portfolio. The off-the-shelf range of worm-geared reducers, helical shaft mounted reducers and associated fittings was introduced to the local market in July 2011 and, according to CMG Electric Motors’ mechanical product manager, Gary Smith, the range is being exceptionally well accepted.

“We are still essentially an electric motor company and the addition of these well designed and manufactured gearboxes to our well known and popular range of energy efficient electric motors allows us to convert our motors into geared motors to offer customers a comprehensive, flexible selection of drive solutions for diverse applications from one central point – a one stop shop,” he says.

“OEMs, who demand plug-and-play motor and gearbox combinations to drive their products, have shown great interest in the products,” he continues. “We can select off-the-shelf gearbox and motor combination units, allowing us to size, configure and couple them to exact demand power and output shaft speed specifications within hours. Our extensive stockholding, coupled with the flexibility of design, gives us the scope to provide a turnkey solution for a variety of applications.”

The current gearbox range, available in 10 sizes, from 0,06 kW to 15 kW, with torque ranges from 3 Nm to 2000 Nm, are worm configuration units with standard hollow shaft casings that allow a single or double output shaft to be fitted.

The shafts are slide and keyed fit types with an external circlip to secure the shaft. The units, complemented with external flanges, can be assembled in a double reduction to present a wider reduction range in a compact assembly and a wide range of ratios is available to suit virtually every customer requirement. All gearboxes feature multimount capabilities. For example, the output shaft can be to the left, the right or both and the unit can be mounted horizontally, vertically or on its side.

CRT worm-geared reducers, designed for coupling to CMG’s MTT lightweight cast aluminium or HLA, EFF1/IE2 compliant cast iron motors dominate the range. The worm shafts and gears are designed and tested for 15 000 running hours, in accordance with BS 721, provided that they are correctly sized and appropriately serviced. The worm shafts are alloy steel case hardened and profile ground and the worm wheels centrifugally cast of bronze on a cast iron hub. CMG uses only premium brand bearings and synthetic oil, as a totally sealed unit demands oil with zero expansion properties.

With appropriate services at regular intervals, these units are capable of performing for up to 20 years. Servicing is quick and easy. The gearboxes have three rubber seals and one blank closing cap and because the rubber seals will perish long before the bearings are affected, the service only requires replacing the seals and the oil. It is only when a complete overhaul is called for that the two taper roller bearings, the two deep-grooved roller bearings, as well as the seals and the welsh plug are replaced.

CMG offers combination kits – two piggy-backed worm-geared drives connected to a single motor – an arrangement that makes high reduction rates possible. Other add-ons that enhance the speed and flexibility of the range include a 3.1 reduction gearbox between the motor and the input shaft to reduce the rpm. CMG also provides a mechanical variator, the UD planetary, with stepless gear reduction ratios from 1:1 to 5:1. The company’s different flanges, torque arms, single and double output shafts and shaft cover plates are further supplements and allow a multitude of mounting options.

It goes without saying that success in Formula 1 requires a top driver. However, their chance of achieving a place on the podium depends on the car, which in turn depends on three essential factors: engine, tyres and aerodynamics. To find the optimum balance, the racing teams test models of their bolides in the wind tunnel. At Sauber, the adjustable components are moved on the model and in the test chamber using FAULHABER motors.
