3rd Quarter 2017Electrical switching & drive systems & components
Dairy producer ErlebnisSennerei Zillertal in Tyrol, Austria, produces high-quality dairy products using sustainably produced milk from pasture raised animals. The dairy uses drive and automation technology from Siemens to optimise standard processes in the dairy, to optimise the integration of third-party systems in the control system, and for cleaning.
The scope of supply includes control cabinets with a special hygiene compliant design, the PCS 7 control system V8.2, a Simatic S7-417 controller, the S7 Microbox for automation and control of the production processes, the distributed I/O system ET200S and the Scalance X204 Ethernet switches for industrial communication. Two HMI touch panels with a 59 cm screen are used to operate the two cheese vats, and a Sinamics G120 converter provides resource-saving closed-loop control for the motors. The Siemens industry software DairyLibrary is used for standardised implementation of the dairy-specific processes. Transmitters from the Sitrans MAG 5000 family record the amounts of milk and cleaning materials.
It was important for ErlebnisSennerei Zillertal to have a control system that could map all the production and cleaning processes and incorporate independent production areas, like filling plants and cheese presses. Another essential requirement was compatibility with the existing Foxboro system. This is why the company opted for Simatic PCS 7 as a platform for long-term use in production. With this state-of-the-art automation environment, ErlebnisSennerei Zillertal is now able to meet all legal food standard requirements, achieve its own high quality demands and run efficient production operations.

Process control system for the entire plant lifecycle Siemens South Africa
Editor's Choice
The automation of process plants has been characterised by IT silos for a long time. The high level of IT security required was achieved through strict isolation from the outside world. However, this made unlocking the opportunities for digitalisation very difficult. This is a compelling reason to opt for Simatic PCS neo – Siemens’s completely web-based process control system with state-of-the-art IT security concepts.
