Refineries upgrade mechanical seals
2nd Quarter 2016
Other technologies
Petrochemical refineries have begun to replace single mechanical seals with ones with a double mechanical design in order to comply with tightened safety legislation. AESSEAL’s Secunda branch manager, Flip van Heerden says that sales of double mechanical seals have increased year-on-year. This is the result of API 682 Edition 3 and refinery overlay specifications, which specify the fitting of double mechanical seals to all pumps transferring hazardous fluids in five categories.
Van Heerden says that all South African refineries are likely to implement full replacement programmes and some have already begun the process. AESSEAL is believed to be the only major mechanical seals supplier providing the end-user with a viable alternative to the very costly pump modification or replacement option. “Excessive expenditure is not necessary because our Cartridge API mechanical seals range, both pusher and bellows, has been designed with consideration for both new and old equipment,” he continues. “It is fully compliant with the specifications of API 682 and uses the same qualified seal face technology for API 610 Edition Ten pumps and API 610 Edition Five pumps, and all the pump variants in between, spanning more than four decades. All the older pumps in refineries across South Africa can be retrofitted, saving millions.”
