Fluid technology company, Hydac, supplies a variety of components, systems and services for wind turbines, and Hydac products can be found in thousands of wind turbines worldwide. Included in the portfolio are hydraulic braking units, sensors for condition monitoring of hydraulic oil; filter systems; and cylinder systems for pitch control. These consist of an integrated linear position system and subplate-mounted control block, with control valve and piston accumulator for emergency function.
The brake control unit can provide rotor brake, yaw brake and rotor lock functions in wind turbines and these can be single or combined. Hydac offers three standard models: yaw brake and rotor brake; yaw brake, rotor brake and rotor lock; and yaw brake, two-stage rotor brake and rotor lock. However, the modular block design allows for further flexibility. It has very low noise and a robust aluminium oil tank. Hydac has kept the size of the individual components to a minimum in order to keep overall dimensions small.
The pressure is supplied either centralised or decentralised by compact hydraulic power units. One braking function is carried out directly in the main block. Other braking functions such as the rotor lock are achieved through additional modular blocks. The drive train brake acts on a brake disk connected by either shaft or coupling, and acts as the secondary braking system. For safety, bolts or slides are locked by means of hydraulic cylinders for maintenance work on the rotor. The gondola (engine house) is maintained in position by means of an azimuth brake system. The power unit always includes a manual pump, filtration and accumulator backup.
