In this last Motion Control issue for 2006 we look back on an eventful year for our association. We saw the launch of a National Certification Program under the umbrella of MERSETA. We are at present conducting a market survey – a first for the SA Fluidpower Industry. We released a host of industry-specific certification programmes aimed at standardising and improving training and upliftment within the industry. The new unit standards from the association are all designed to conform to SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) standards, and therefore adhere to the NQF (National Qualifications Framework) guidelines. We anticipate keen participation of member companies and look forward to meaningful results.

The 2006 SAFPA Annual Dinner was held at The Old Edwardian Club on 15 September. It was attended by many from the fluid power industry and it was a social event that was enjoyed immensely by those who were there. The 2006 Merit Award was presented to Russell Gill in recognition of his outstanding contribution and service to the SA Fluid Power Industry, in particular for his work with MERSETA. One of the highlights of the evening was Herman the Magician who performed impressive feats of magic to entertain the guests.

At this point I would like to thank a few people for their dedication and support to grow SAFPA for the good of our industry and its people. I would like to thank all our committee members for their tireless input, all the staff of CTR for their professional administration, and Motion Control for an excellent publication and service to the industry.

I wish you a Merry Christmas and happy holidays!
Yours truly,
Fritz Kern
