Keep it compact

3rd Quarter 2010 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Tectra Automation has introduced Bosch Rexroth’s new harmonised IndraMotion MTX control platform to the South African market.

This innovative controller reduces the time required to design and build a new machine by adapting the scope of supply and offering numerous predefined functions. It incorporates a PLC in accordance with IEC 61131-3, and presents all hardware and software functions for turning and milling machines in a central control cabinet assembly. Fully compatible with the MTX CNC family from Bosch Rexroth as well as intelligent IndraDrive servo drives, the IndraMotion MTX micro achieves accuracies down to the nanometre.

Specifications correspond to the typical requirements of compact machine tools. The IndraMotion MTX micro is ideal for automating up to four feed drives for turning or milling machines as a CNC controller with integrated PLC. A built-in frequency converter function facilitates the use of standard asynchronous motors as a simple main drive system. Combined with spindle drives with positioning capability, the standard version of the control for turning machines offers C-axis function and powered tools.

A high-performance 32-bit processor in the central control cabinet assembly of the system provides for short CNC and PLC cycle times and enables production accuracies down to the nanometre while ensuring high productivity. The I/O interface with modular expansion capability integrates 24 V d.c. auxiliary sensors and actuators into the automation setup despite the lack of additional coupling relays.

A user panel offers a variety of standard functions that also make it possible to commission and optimise without a programming unit. Like all CNC controllers from Bosch Rexroth, the IndraWorks engineering suite is included for project planning and development. This and a standard DNC mode for central management and activation of NC programs connect to a fast Ethernet interface. The compact controller is based on the same open CNC and PLC standards as the other machine tool controllers in the IndraMotion MTX family.

A range of technology cycles for turning and milling also facilitates the completion of challenging machining tasks. Systems data is stored using a sturdy, easy to handle Compact Flash module. The USB interface on the HMI panel can be used to easily import and export entire machine projects and NC data or to make backups to a memory stick.
