Extending life of continuous casting machines
2nd Quarter 2010
Other technologies
Demanding ambient conditions are encountered in continuous casting machines – in particular the service life of rotating unions is impacted by:
* Cooling water is of poor quality and has entrained abrasive particles.
* Dirt from the ambient air is carried into the plant by rotating parts.
* Imperfect alignment of roller and union results in mechanical loads.
Where possible, users aim to reduce costs through avoiding machine downtime and minimising maintenance costs.
The series 2400 rotating union combines the proven features of earlier series with the most recent Deublin design innovations. The design comprises a rotating union with the rotor guided by a long bearing bush. Sealing is achieved using mechanically balanced silicone carbide seals running against silicone carbide. The design ensures a constant torque and a long service life.
Special attention has been paid to minimising sedimentation and its abrasive/corrosive effects through design and material selection. Small alignment failures and wear are compensated without affecting the sealing ability. New seals prevent the inclusion of dirt from the environment and facilitate maintenance. The housing is fully compatible with that of the series 2000 to minimise costs associated with conversion to the new generation.
The model 2400 creates a cost-effective opportunity for steel works operators to change to the latest technology for continuous casting machines and to reduce machine downtime.
