Compact hydraulic motors

Third Quarter 2005 Hydraulic systems & components

Black Bruin hydraulic motors can be easily mounted to vehicle wheel rims. These motors may be fitted with built-in brakes and provide high power output in a small size. They are easily adapted to various services. Their light and compact design permits a wide variety of wheel hub applications in mobile equipment design. (Old-fashioned axles or speed reducers are no longer a necessity.)

Superior starting torque

The multiple stroke radial piston design of Black Bruin hydraulic motors offers outstanding low speed operating characteristics and a high starting torque, which surpasses by 10% to 20% that of high-speed hydraulic motors connected to a speed reducer. Thus, maximum pull force of vehicle will be achieved at low diesel engine speeds, thereby improving operator comfort, lowering noise levels and reducing fuel consumption. Ground obstacles can be overcome without speeding or rushing.

Wide speed ranges

These hydraulic motors offer a 3 to 4 operating speed range than most hydraulic rooters do. In mobile equipment applications the speed ranges are selected by:

* Freewheeling (either mechanically or hydraulically). This feature allows the motors to work in multispeed transmission designs, or to be freewheeled on towed vehicles at high speeds. The motors can be re-engaged, or disengaged while the vehicle is moving. Hydraulic power is not required when the mechanical free wheel option is installed.

* Using two-speed motors - Halving the volumetric displacement for each motor revolution doubles running speed.

Variety of brake options

These include:

* Wet multidisc, spring set, pressure release.

* Pressure to apply wet multidisc type for standard automotive operation.

* Mechanical shoe or mechanical disc and calliper.

Research and over 30 years of extensive experience in high torque wheel hub motors stand behind the Black Bruin hydraulic motor range. Sampo Hydraulics' ambitious research and development program keeps the company at the forefront of hydraulic motors developments. Sampo Hydraulics is represented in South Africa by Axiom Hydraulics, a member of the South African Fluid Power Association.

How to protect against water hammer
SA Gauge Editor's Choice Hydraulic systems & components
Water hammer is a high-pressure surge or wave created by the kinetic energy of moving fluid when it is rapidly forced to stop or change direction, altering the liquid’s velocity. The progression of the water hammer shockwave needs to be detained and slowed before reaching the instrument sensor. SA Gauge manufactures several such devices in order to achieve this.
